We are pleased to announce that AREA will be holding a special exhibition entitled “The Art of Negoro Nuri – A Miracle in Lacquer” to showcase the works of the late Koichi Kosaka, a master craftsman of Kiso’s traditional lacquerware.
Negoro Nuri, a lacquer art form that flourished in the Middle Ages and later disappeared, embodies the power of life and regeneration through its vivid vermilion. Kosaka dedicated his life to reviving this lost art, and this exhibition presents the culmination of his extraordinary craftsmanship, now revived for the modern age.
The exhibition will travel through AREA Tokyo, Paris, and New York, presenting a curated selection of unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that combine diverse techniques distinctive to Kosaka’s style. These rare works have been highly acclaimed in Japan for many years, and we warmly invite you to experience them.
